Per the Owner's Manual, you're supposed to clean the mesh filter every 15k miles. Oil and filter are to be replaced every 7.5k miles OR every 12 months, whichever comes first, but the mesh is purely based on mileage. I have never done it on my 899 as I sold it well before it reached 15k miles, but - from the Service Manual - it doesn't seem a difficult job, maybe a bit tedious as you need to remove a few things before you can actually get to it. I did this earlier this year. I don’t think it was that difficult other than having to take a few things apart such as the fairings, the radiator fan, and the exhaust. If you have the stock exhaust I hear it can be difficult because the bolts corrode. I was able to get my termis off just by removing the exhaust springs.

Once you have all that off, drain the oil, drop the pan, clean it up and reseal. Then wait for it to cure.

my bike is at 24,000 miles, I did the service at 23,000 and it had never been done before. Definitely some gunk in there but nothing alarming.

there’s a YouTube video out there by Fancy Animal, he does this on his 1199 and does a good job walking through the process.

Yeah don’t hesitate to ask away. Just make sure you set aside 2-3 days for the project. Realistically, it will only take 1-2 hours to get everything and the oil pan removed. Then another day for the rtv to cure and another 1-2 hours for reinstall. But if you budget 2-3 days you can take your time and lower the stress.

Just wanted to say I appreciate the response and direct answers to my questions regarding the bike. I am just super excited about the 899 in general also I 've completed some things on it I did the oil change, upper support (headlight support piece one mirror mount (left)). was broken, air filter and now I have a wonderful understanding as to how all the fairings go on/off the bike. Mesh pick up will wait, think to have it done with desmo. What you think? Also wanted to discuss more about the vehicles (Ferrari) that you've had, as I have/had some pretty special cars also in fact one of the reasons I needed the 899 was to complete my current garage ensemble. As for your 899, how many miles are on it? And do you know how frequently the oil was changed?

My bike receives annual oil changes and when I cleaned the mesh filter at 24,000 miles could probably go 2 or 3 times longer without issue. But, I think that’s because I’m changing the oil every year and keeping any of the debris down. Also, when they seal the oil pan they use RTV. This can squeeze out of the edges inside the oil pan, dislodge over time, and clog up the mesh.
