I thought that I would start up a thread on other bikes that would be competing against the 899 Panigale. It's hard to find competitors though because Ducati created a new segment with the 899 Panigale -- the supermid category. Any help in figuring out what else is similar would be greatly appreciated.

I think most will be looking at how it compares to the 848 EVO and how close it is to the 1199

In terms of other brands?? Well its going to cost more than most 600cc super sports and even 750cc+

So its hard to say. But people will compare the 899 to pretty much every super sport over 600cc.

Mostly I see people comparing the 899 Panigale to its bigger brother the 1199 Panigale. It is in a bit of a grey area because it is trying to carve out a new segment. I guess that the best way to see what is comparable is to go by bikes that cost something similar, and then you can just compare the specs between the two bikes.

you could make the case that the 899 panigale can take on some bikes in the full super category, for example the KTM 1190 RC8. The KTM has 173 hp compared to the 899s 148 hp but the KTM also weighs 405 lbs vs the 899s 372 lbs.

So when looking at power to weight the KTM 1190 comes in at 2.34 lbs/hp while the 899 tips it at 2.5 lbs/hp. Not bad when you consider the Panigales 899cc displacement vs the KTMs 1,195cc displacement.

Its not a direct comparison but i dont think you can discount what the 899 can do vs the 1190

The KTM Duke 1190 is right around the same area as the 899 Panigale. It is priced a bit higher at $16,499, but that puts it in the same price range. I can see them being cross shopped and if that is the case then I'd say they can be considered competitors.

I think the 990 Super Duke is a better comparo, but its never fair to put naked bikes up against 'supermids' or super anythings, they suffer aerodynamically.

What about the 899 Panigale vs the BMW S1000RR? from 999cc It puts out 193 hp/83 lb-ft of torque in a 451 lb package (wet), giving power to weight of 2.33 lbs/hp. Similar to the KTM and ever so slightly better than the Panigales 2.5 lbs/horse.

But keep in mind the S1000RR is a full on Liter bike, the panigale gives up 100ccs and still keeps pace. MONSTER, actually thats another Ducati ;)

Well, the BMW S1000RR definitely keeps up in the looks department, and it packs a punch too. The price comes in at right around the same as the 899 Panigale -- $15,050.

I can definitely see the cross shop between the two bikes.

the thing is though, the BMW is the FASTEST production bike ever built, so if people are cross shopping the S1000RR and the 899 Panigale the Panigale will lose every time, unless its a ducatista doing the shopping...

don't really compare the 899 to the super duke or the s1000rr

The 1199 is a better comparison to those two.

There are smaller displacement BMWs and KTMs to compare the 899 to.
You're right definitely not a 'fair' comparison but I used the Super Duke and S1000RR as benchmarks, those are two of the most bonkers bikes on the market and the fact that the 899 can put up similar P/W ratios is quite impressive. To me at least...

Well wouldn't it be more fair to compare the 1199 to those two?
Benchmark.... You could look at the 1199 vs those guys all day but how boring is that when the 1199 was designed to compete with them. the 899 was not designed to compete with the Super Duke or the S1000RR but puts up very similar power to weight numbers. That impressive for a bike to punch that well out of its weight class...

Its like watching a heavyweight fight a middle weight, you know the heavy weight is going to win but the fact that the mid weight gives the heavy so much trouble is impressive in its own right..
