So I was pretty much blown away by my test ride of the 899 at my local Duc dealer. The demo bike had like 40 miles on it so the dealer kindly asked my to keep it under 6,000 RPM for break in reasons. Out of respect for them letting me go on a joy ride for free, I of course did so (OK, I may have cheated once and went to almost 7k). A few times I full throttled it through a few gear shifting a 6 grand. I think it had decent power but I have to say I was a little disappointed. I thought it would have more low end grunt. Maybe I am comparing too much to my Concours 14 (with Guhl tune, i.e. way more low end then stock) and my old KTM Superduke 990.

I've seen some conflicting reports that the power is smooth and linear and others that say it becomes a different bike at certain RPM.

My question is did I get good idea of power or did I not even scratch the surface?

I'm still running mine in and only have 180 on the clock, I've taken it through the revs to about 8k a couple of times, but the bike I took for a test ride was already broke in so gave that some and have to say once up in the revs it's a different bike in sport mode. Can't wait to get mine through the 1st service so can give it some revs.

My 848 was insane over 8K, especially with the 14T front sprocket. I'm expecting the same from my new 899. I also only have about 140 miles on my 899 and I've only hit maybe 7,100RPM once or twice.

After the first service at 600 miles, it'll be balls out! I'm the type that likes to work engines really hard to break them in.

Seems like you had it in wet mode
Maybe for brake in purposes
I definitely had it in sport mode. I even changed it to race mode just to check that out. I saw very little, if any, difference from sport to race mode. Maybe the way I was ridding it, or maybe the dealer did some kind of ECU magic where its in some kind of break in mode all the time??

From 9k till redline the power is definitely not linear as it pulls very hard and i have found myself bouncing off the limiter a few times as it revs so quickly. The bike is very fast on the top end and very linear below 8/9 k rpms. Going to the track in a few weeks so will be goid to compare with my rsv4 .

I'll be anxious to hear how the two compared.

I am at 650kms and have been pretty much quite disciplined to 6-7rpm...I have had a couple of blips of naughtiness....for example, coming our of the petrol station and giving it a bit of welly....only to find the front wheel well off the ground and doing an awesome power wheelie, completely by mistake.....I can't do them even when I try.
Thank god for the traction control later as i came out of a turning, gave a small throttle only to find the back wheel hit a small bit of grease and the back of the bike just about to disappear from underneath me but was immediately saved by the DTC as it more or less killed the power......i am there would have been tears otherwise! and looking like a complete wanker in front of loads of tourists on Nathan Road in Hong Kong!

Looking forward to non restricted riding so I can keep up with my mates!

^^ forecast is for 39degrees celcius so I don't think I'll need to run tyre warmers :)

Mine now has 2,200 km so I went for a short ride last Saturday and came back 3 hrs and about 250 km later. Ran a few more revs and can confirms it really develops some mumbo once you get over 6 to 7,000 rpm. Picks up speed surprisingly fast - much faster than it feels, especially with the DQS. I'll be taking it to PI for a double header track day soon so it will be interesting to run it back to back with my ZX6RR. I expect the 899 will smoke it. Will also be interesting to see how it runs alongside 1199's down the straight and through the fast turns.
