Early versions of a modern motorcycle helmet were introduced over a century ago when motorcycle engines became more powerful and riders start to go faster. As a result, more accidents followed. The need for protection arose. First helmets were sewn from pieces of thick leather offering some abrasion protection but providing almost no impact protection in the case of a collision at high speed. Seeing an increase in numbers of head injuries among riders, British neurosurgeon Hugh Cairns offered to add a hard shell layer to the construction of a helmet to prevent penetration on impact.
