Hi everyone -

Long time Ducati owner, first time poster, thanks for taking my call!

It all started in 2002, well it started before then, but it happened in 2002. I got my first official "big boy" job here in Colorado after being a wilderness guide for about a decade. I had motorcycles, but never super nice ones, and certainly not new ones, so after the first paycheck I called the shop I had worked with on my most recent "used" bike purchase (they were a Ducati dealer) and said - I want a new bike.

The guy there knew me and went down the usual list of nice used bikes they had and I stopped him. No, a NEW bike, I said.

Shortly thereafter in the conversation we had ruled out the recently introduced 749 / 999 bikes and the Aprilia RSV, they were just more than I could actually afford, and honestly I hadn't come to like the look of the "new" Ducati. I loved the classic 916 look. So he dug around a bit and came up with a leftover 748 (base) that we agreed was the right bike. It arrived and I was instantly hooked.

A very short while later I caught wind on the local forums that Aprilia and Sportbike Track Time were coming to Colorado for a track "demo" day that also included instruction. It seemed like a mighty good idea to use the motorcycle for what is was made for and with 602 miles on the clock and the initial service complete I took out some fuses, taped over some lights, bought a suit and headed to the racetrack.

The rest of the story is fairly predictable. Within an hour of wrapping up my first track day I was on the racing forums looking for a track specific bike and within a month I had a race license, a dedicated racebike and a new addiction.

Fast forward to 2014 and we reach the second time in my life that I have purchased a brand new motor vehicle. Again, a Ducati, again the "little brother" of the full superbike. I've since pretty much quit riding on the road, so this time it's going to be a racebike from the start.

I can't wait!

Thanks for putting this forum together, I suspect I'll be a frequent contributor!

Thanks!

It's amazing the things the can and can't change in the world level series'.

For example, that is clearly not a stock triple clamp or fork cartridges, but the brake calipers are stock.

Good fun. Would love to see if they get to swap the suspension linkage and if so what they are using. For that we would have to see the other side of the bike.

Welcome to the forum Scott!

Looking forward to seeing your 899 build.

Do you have any pics of your 748?

Cheers!
Here are some pics of the 748

Pics of the 899 in race trim coming soon!

I also raced a 748 (a different one) for about 7 seasons. Pics of that one soon too.

Hey guys, my name is Matt. I'm picking up my 899 on Tuesday. I live in Denver and did my first couple of track days last season at HPR on my Monster 796 (just sold to buy the 899). Anyway needless to say, after a couple of track days last year I've got the bug! Bought an 899, one piece , and a Kendon trailer all from doing 2 track days! Advice would be appreciated; I don't have the time to actually race, but want to be as good and as safe as possible on the track. I intend on doing at least 5 or 6 open lapping days this year. Any advice for a good local track school? (I've done the Total Control clinics, and a private lesson with Ricky Orlando)

Hi Matt-

I race in the MRA and teach private lessons (much like RO does) during open lapping days during the season. Please feel free to reach out to me via email regarding coaching.

If you're looking for more of a "group instruction" situation, you're in luck. In just a couple of weeks the MRA is holding it's annual new racer school. While the primary intent of the school is to train new racers to get their licenses, it's really one of the best values in training in the history of ever. You can find information about it here:

As you can see from my introduction we have similar paths. It doesn't take long to get addicted to this sport and I have to say that it's been one of the most positive things I've done in my life. The community that groups around track days and racing is really a superb group of people.

See you at the track!

T-wizzle:"Is it me or are those pictures of the same bike? One side u can see its a double sided swing from our 889, but in the other side it looks like a single sided swingarm from a 1199. Plus the number on one side says 51, the other says 1!?! Seems like two different bikes but with the same color scheme."

Good catch, two different bikes same color scheme. This is the one you want.
