Changed oil and the engine maintenance light is on now

Is this normal? It knows when you changed the oil? I'm waiting on ELM327 scanner and cable, already loaded the Melco Diag software on laptop but just checking if computer knows automatically when you change the oil? It's the first oil change ever.

When you say the “engine maintenance light”, which light are you referring to? I’m not sure if you mean the yellow engine light or the thing on there display that says maintenance is required.

yellow engine light.
The engine (or better, the ECU) has no idea you changed the oil. If your "ENGINE/VEHICLE DIAGNOSIS - EOBD" light (to be clear: the yellow one at top-left of the dash, which looks like an engine) is ON, it means you have a problem somewhere. I find it very strange that it went on right after the oil change, I don't see a reason for that to happen... did you touch anything else on the bike?
For the record, the service reminder indicator is in the dash (next to the gear indicator) and it will turn on when the bike is due for an oil change or desmo service.
Good job in getting MelcoDiag, it can read fault codes and reset your service reminder (and do a bunch of other things too). Definitely recommended.
Ok thanks, I turned it on after putting 3.5 quarts of oil to pump oil into oil filter, maybe it didn't like that, that's when light came on.
Yeah I dunno, sounds like a coincidence. I can’t think of any reason the yellow engine light would come on from the oil change unless something was unplugged or perhaps you pinched a wire somewhere?
I'll check the code once I get the harness. who knows...
Oh the battery went dead today, that might be why? Original battery that was hooked to a tender. Have replacement ready waiting to go in.
Definitely possible, low voltage can cause numerous issues with electronics.
