Had this problem over the past week or so, I have a 899 that has done 350 miles and I'm currently running her in. When Im downshifting coming up to a junction or roundabout the bike cuts out in 2nd or 1st gear, has anyone else had this problem!! It starts back up fine, just so annoying now!!! is this common when running in the bike?

thanks barney

Hi Guys,

I found this forum post after searching on Google for 1199 Cut out problems.

I found 2 posts one on the 1199 forum and this here on the 899 forum.

My bike has done this 4 times in the last month, always when up to temperature (Not on a short run) and mostly 3rd to 2nd in my instance when using the clutch when downshifting.

It is back with my local Ducati dealer Causeway in Perth Australia for diagnosis.

My bike is 1199 Superleggera number 366 any feedback you have on what your problems were diagnosed as really appreciated.

I will also PM the 2 guys above who had similar issues.

Regards

I don't have an answer for you, but I can say that I have done 3200 kms on my 899 and never had the issue once until yesterday. I had just left from my home after letting the bike warmup to over 40 degrees as I always do, rode about 1km and whilst approaching a roundabout the bike just randomly turns off whilst braking and downshifting. Engine temp was probably about 55 degrees celcius by this time. The oil light was on so I immediately checked the oil level and all was fine. I started the bike back up and all was good. Let it idle for a while while I checked everything and took it easy for the next few kms. No issues at all! Did a 100km ride after that and the issue never reoccurred. Strange!!

If anyone knows what causes this sort of thing I'd be interested to know too.

hmmm. I think it could electrical or fuel..

what fuel do you guys use? I think the bike requires no more than 89 octane...I think. But of course with any high performance engine, you should put in the highest available (93 in my area)
also, have you checked your batter connections? make sure they're tight... I had a similar issue with my car when my batter kill switch in my trunk was knocked by a 6 pack of beer I had in there... Car was running fine, but would die on downshift and then come back on.... it's just a thought

Just a suggestion, and I may be totally wrong on this but, it could be your "bike stand DOWN switch", the inertia of a downshift may be enough to momentarily make it think your stand is down, check that it is secure and adjusted correctly. Would explain it being an "occasional" issue

I had this problem on my previous Monster 1100EVO.
Only when the bike was warm and when I did pull the clutch leaver it happened occasionally.
My local technician was sure that in my case it was due to the fact that the ECU is switching to a different fuel mapping and something is not always working out 100% in this map. He did solve this directly in the ECU as he already had flashed the ECU before (gained 20 Nm and 12 bhp at around 4000 RPM from this and use of MWR power up filters on that bike ;-) )

Hi Guys,

I have spoken to a local Ducati Specialist.

He has heard of a number of this "family" of bikes doing exactly the same.

His opinion is that it is highly unlikely to be related to fuel or loose battery connections because it presents in very similar fashion each time (Going down the gears)

My bike run exclusively on the highest octane available same as others.

With my bike the Quick Shifter retards timing to be able to do it's job and he suspects it is a "software" fault in this system which is giving us the problems.

It is retarding too much causing the engine to stall which seems a sensible potential cause.

It also only seems to happen when the bike is warmed up which is an interesting point?

Can everyone who is having this issue drop me a PM with your proper "Non Forum" name and location as I am trying to give this list to Ducati so that they can understand how wide spread the problem is.

I don't need full addresses or anything like that just name/location and type of bike (As much detail as possible on your bike including, model, mileage, purchased from/date)

Barney,

I have PM's you as well.

They reflashed my ECU and went on an 80km test ride with no issues, I will be home Thursday and will take it out myself and see if the problem is cleared and will keep you posted.

If you haven't tried an ECU flash yet might be worth giving that a go.

Does anyone have a fix for this?
I have owned my 899 for just over 12 months and it is happening every now and then.
I have tried different fuels, changed the plugs etc etc.
Should I get the Dealer to reflash the ECU?
On my third day with my new (to me) 899. Bike was warm and after about 2km, while approaching a stop light and downshifted from 3rd to 2nd. Bike just died. :tango_face_surprise

I too am curious if an ECU flash has been determined to be the solution to what sounds like a fairly common issue.

Thanks in advance for any help/responses.
