I've been riding the 620, and I'm ready to move on to superbikes. I love the 899 and I love the RSV4. The 899's exhaust sounds like family to me after my years with the Monster, but like a hyper, extroverted, self-centered uncle who just can't be quiet. I worry that it could detract from a very scenic ride. I wish that I could put a quieter exhaust. Even better would be one that roars only when I'm pushing hard. Do I have any options?

From what i have heard of the Akrapovic it is quieter down low and only roars higher up in the revs (5k beyond). It's one of the reasons i'm getting em, the other reason is the quality. Those welds look gorgeous and the bits of carbon that come with it.

Have you seen Japan's version! Man that exhaust is so ugly that I'm sure it's quiet! But honestly, there's not very many options for exhaust at the moment. All the ones I've seen would actually be louder than the termis. Others as in aftermarket exhaust for the 1199 cause they also fit our 899

Maybe there's a baffle insert you can get for the stock exhaust. (If you don't want to drop a pretty penny on an aftermarket set up).

When I'm in the lower RPM range it's not very loud IMO but it could be that my helmet (Shoei) cuts most of the noise.

Just wear earplugs - much cheaper solution.

I do wear earplugs! :) I have an hour-long commute in which I rev pretty high.

Any suggestions for earplugs? Maybe I can get something moulded to my ear that's more dense than foam?
Moulded earplugs are the go.
Easy to fit and don't move around in your ears if you yawn, pop your ears etc.

Wow, if you commute for an hour I'd hate to think how long it would take in a car:eek:

Isn't that akrapovic exhaust the one that comes with the 899 Panigale? Are you saying that he shouldn't need to do anything to the exhaust to get the note that he wants?

I'm sure there is an exhaust set-up out there that will work for you, you just gotta do some research.

I am pretty sure the Akraoovic exhaust Is louder than the standard exhaust.

Akrapovic 110dB at 5375rpm
Standard 108dB at 5375rpm

I would suggest the termi slips on's with dB killer inserts maybe a tad quieter than stock

Cheers
