My 899 doesnt want to start while in gear,
Starts no problem in neutral, new to Ducatis but i assume this isnt normal, its as if the bike thinks the kickstand is still down or something, could it be a switch or a setting m unaware of? any ideas? Thx in advance!

Per the Owner's Manual, the 899 would start in gear if the side stand is up AND the clutch is pulled. Should the stand switch be broken (bike thinks the stand is always down), the ECU will cut the engine as soon as you put it into gear. Since you didn't mention this, then I would guess that the problem is the clutch switch. First of all, take a look and make sure you hear it clicking when you pull the clutch... if memory serves me well, the switch has a little blade that gets pushed by a pin, check if the blade is bent or the pin is bent, or anything mechanical. Next step is to find a place (a connector) where you can put a multimeter on the terminals and see if it really works.
Thanks for the reply. Ok interesting.. well Ill take a look at that switch pin & blade the bike is new to me and i did just replace the stock levers with some aftermarket
ASV levers but was pretty sure i didnt bend or break anything during the installation process.
If that was the case where the pin or blade was bent would it not give me some srting issues in other situations..starts up like a charm in neutral, no issues shiting in and out of gear etc but who knows..
As far as testing with a multimeter not sure of the exact place(which terminals) to test that but ill start with the blade/pin thing first…hopefully its not a serious hard to find issue
Problem solved..yeah the little blade piece was miss aligned a bit and wasnt engaging with the sensor and the pin

thanks for the hep 120CCPM🙏

Glad to hear it! Enjoy your 899! By the way, I think the bike relies on the clutch switch also to determine whether you're shifting "normally", or you're using the quick-shifter (in which case it cuts the power for a fraction of a second), so it's important to have it properly adjusted.

I've just picked up a crashed 899 and making it into a trackbike, to start it the sidestand must be up, I will check the clutch lever switch, could it be that ?

If I remember correctly, the 899 should start with the sidestand down, when in Neutral. The sidestand should be up (and the clutch pulled) only when started in gear. Maybe your bike doesn't detect the Neutral position correctly... what does the gear indicator say, on the dash? Is it "N" when the gearbox is effectively in Neutral? And what about the green "N" light, at the top of the dashboard, is it ON?

EDIT: just in case, here below is the position of the gear sensor, the part number, and the Gear Learning Procedure
