Cored exhaust backfiring

I recently cored my own exhaust. Only removed the cat and now I get an occasional loud backfire on decelerating after accelerating hard. Does anyone else have this? I'm not sure if this is caused by a lean or rich condition? From what I understood, if just coring the exhaust a tune isn't required.
