Whistleing sound when cruising at 4000rpm

Hey guys, I'm new to this forum and just got a second hand 899. Is it normal for the bike to make a high pitch whistleing sound when cruising at around 4000rpm? Makes Street riding tough without ear plugs. If I hang off either side of the bike I do not hear it. Is it coming from the airbox? Some plastic bits not on right? The bike has 20000 km.

Not normal. You’ll need to inspect the bike to see if there are any loose bits, missing bits, or possibly some aftermarket part installed that’s causing the whistle . You may be able to reproduce the whistle with a leaf blower so you can find it with your feet safely on the ground.

I was thinking about this more. Are you certain it’s a 4000rpm whistle? For example, if you are in neutral at a stand still and rev the bike to 4K... does it whistle? Or is it only when moving?

If so t could be something with the intake as you mentioned before. Perhaps the filter isn’t seated quite right or there might be something lodged in the duct. Lifting the gas tank to inspect is fairly easy.

Remove plastic cover at front of tank around where your key goes (4 screws).

Remove seat (1 screw)

Remove metal braket under seat (2 nuts and 1 screw)

Disconnect ground wire, lift up tank slight from the rear (it will pivot at the front of the tank) and disconnect the single wiring clip for the fuel pump.

Once you’ve done that you can take a peak inside and see if anything is amiss.
