First Track Day and Comparison to 2015 S1000RR
I just completed two days at the California Superbike School with my 899 the first day and the school's 2015 BMW S1000RR on day two. I just bought the 899 and did not push too hard during the first 3 sessions but by the end of the day we had a fairly good pace.
Here are some things that I noticed: 1) the stock 899 suspension is not too bad but an upgrade is in order for future track days. 2) I passed plenty of BMW's on the 899. It is nimble and quick but the RPM's need to be 8,000+ to generate the thrust. 3) I used gears 2 - 5 on both bikes but did more shifting on the 899. 4) The BMW transmission is incredible. The auto downshifts are simple, smooth, and effective. 5) I have found no better way of improving my track and street skills than attending a track school. Everyone should do it. 5) The difference in straightaway speed was 140 for the 899 and close to 150 for the BMW.
The 899 is plenty fun for average Joe's like me (I also own a BMW S1000RR HP4 which is also great fun) however, any bike with the auto downshift could be my next purchase. It is that good. Looking forward to upgrading the exhaust and suspension prior to my next track day. Cheers everyone.
